WiMAX and Beyond WiMAX Technology

WiMAX, meaning Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology for wireless data transfer with a variety of ways, from point-multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access. The technology offers up to 10 Mbps throughput, without the need for cables. The technology is based on the IEEE 802.16 (also called Broadband Wireless Access), which is based intended for wireless “metropolitan area networks”. WiMAX may Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) up to offer 30 miles (50 km) for fixed stations and 3-10 miles (5 -15 km) for mobile stations. However, the standard wireless LAN WiFi/802.11 is in most cases, only 100 to 300 feet (- 100 m 30) is limited.

With WiMAX, WiFi, such as data rates are easily supported, but the issue of interference is lessened. WiMAX operates at frequencies in both licensed and unlicensed, and provides a regulated environment and viable economic model for wireless carriers. Continue reading »
